Almost Half of This Group of Americans Owns a Gun Americans have varied reasons for gun ownership. These reasons include hunting, protection, sport shooting, and collecting. Some owners need them for their jobs; law enforcement and soldiers keep a side arm and usually some type of shotgun. A 2023 Gallup survey stated that 42% of Americans personally own a firearm. There are approximately 120.5 guns to 100 people in the US. Whatever the reasoning behind owning a gun – firearm sales are booming. It’s important to note that gun ownership rates vary significantly among diverse demographic groups, regions, income brackets, and other categorizations. Geographic region dictates a notable difference in ownership rates. In the Eastern US, approximately 19% own firearms. On the other hand, the Southern states have reached about 40%, over twice as high. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the most recent Gallup poll, Household Gun Ownership in the U.S. Among Subgroups. The survey questioned whether respondents possessed firearms individually. Participants were categorized by criteria such as gender, political party affiliation, geographical region, and community type. This post was updated on June 20, 2025 to reflex the most up-to-date information. Why This Matters 24/7 is covering trends in gun ownership because the gun industry has wide-reaching effects on our nation’s economy. Multi-million-dollar corporations that manufacture, distribute, and sell firearms stimulate the economy on a national and local level. When a consumer purchases a firearm from notable firearm companies such as Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Sig Sauer, and Springfield Armory, they support an array of jobs created by this industry, as well as generating tax revenues at a state and federal level. Smith & Wesson: Dividends And Share Buybacks Could Be At Risk (Rating Downgrade) Downgrading Smith & Wesson due to disappointing free cash flow and weak FY25 results, missing revenue and earnings estimates. Rising inventory, declining cash reserves, and increased debt signal potential financial strain and risk to future dividends and buybacks. The current valuation is too high given the lack of near-term growth, ongoing macroeconomic pressures, and execution challenges. seekingalpha.com - 2 weeks ago
Companies Making America’s Favorite Large Caliber Pistols The United States is the largest consumer market for firearms in the world, and that market is largely dominated by pistols. Pistols — a specific category of handguns that excludes revolvers — accounted for over 40% of all domestic firearm manufacturing in the U.S. in 2023. For context, rifles (the second most popular firearm type) accounted for less than 32%. 24/7 Wall St. Key Points: In recent decades, American law enforcement and the U.S. military have moved away from large-caliber sidearms in favor of 9mm pistols. Still, 9mm handguns are not well suited for many common firearm applications, and consumer demand for many larger caliber pistols remains strong — particularly bearing the name of certain gunmakers. Also: Discover the next Nvidia In recent decades, pistols chambered for 9mm ammunition have emerged as a clear favorite among American gun owners. Smaller than some other pistol calibers, 9mm firearms generally benefit from reduced recoil, greater magazine capacity, and more compact designs — while still remaining effective for self-defense purposes. Due to these factors, the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies across the country have moved away from larger .40 caliber and .45 caliber sidearms in favor of the 9mm platform. (Here is a look at the oldest weapons still used by the U.S. military.) However, whether for increased stopping power in self-defense scenarios, hunting, or protection from dangerous wildlife, large-caliber pistols still have significant market share in the United States. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, domestic gunmakers manufactured nearly 425,000 large-caliber pistols in 2023 alone. These firearms include those chambered for.357 Sig, 10mm, .40, .45, and even .50 caliber ammunition — all of which are larger than 9mm rounds. One notable trend is the surge in popularity of large-format “pistol-caliber pistols”, or PCPs for short. These, alongside 9 mm-based weapons, are on the rise due to the popularity of brace-equipped firearms. Consumers are also showing high interest in .40 S&W pistols, featuring calibers developed for defensive shooting. Additionally, classic guns like SIG P227 and Wildey pistols are still going strong due to their customization and iconic styles. Large caliber pistols, whether expansive PCPs (AP51) or classic magnums (Wildey) are creating distinct markets in this year. They are part traditional pistols and part high-caliber performing weapons, taking advantage of both old-school strength and modern technology. While there are thousands of companies manufacturing firearms in the United States, only a small handful of them account for the bulk of large caliber pistol production. Using data from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. identified the companies behind America’s favorite large-caliber pistols. We reviewed domestic manufacturing figures for thousands of federally licensed gunmakers and ranked them on large caliber pistol production volume in 2023. Data on the location of each company’s production facilities and total firearm manufacturing output in 2023 are also from the ATF. Firearms made outside of the United States, including those made by the companies on this list, were not included in this ranking. Each of the companies on this list manufactured over 500 large-caliber pistols in the U.S. in 2023. Combined, these 31 companies produced 413,000 large-caliber pistols domestically, accounting for over 97% of all American made pistols chambered for ammunition larger than 9mm in 2023. The companies behind the best-selling, American-made large-caliber pistols include some of the world’s largest gunmakers. Companies like Glock, Sig Sauer, and Smith & Wesson stand out specifically for their pistols — many of which are chambered for large caliber ammunition. (Here is a look at the most popular gun companies in America.) This post was updated on June 14, 2025 to include recent trends regarding PCPs and classic magnums. Why It Matters Arms and ammunition is a more than $90 billion industry in the United States — and much of the industry is fueled by demand for pistols, including those with a high level of stopping power. While the U.S is home to the manufacturing operations of thousands of gunmakers — including many of the largest in the world — a small handful of companies dominate the market for large caliber pistols. 31. Concord Woman Accused Of Shooting At Cops During Welfare Check Call; Held On Preventative Detention HENNIKER, NH — A woman from Concord was arrested last month and held without bail after being accused of firing a gun at Henniker police officers during a welfare check call. Erica Kowalski, 48, of Hampshire Drive in Concord, was arrested on May 30, 2025, on reckless conduct-deadly weapon and criminal threatening-deadly weapon, both felonies, as well as negligent discharge-gun, bow, etc., simple assault, two resisting arrest or detention, and two breach of bail charges. Limited information is available about the case, but according to court documents and scanner chatter, a person received a photo of Kowalski with a firearm, which raised concerns, and they called Henniker police. A lieutenant and three officers were sent to Browns Way around 7:30 p.m. on May 30 for a welfare check on the woman. Police attempted to capture her, but she fled via a trail along railroad tracks near the property, according to scanner chatter. During the incident, Kowalski was accused of threatening the officers with a Smith & Wesson 9 mm and later, firing the gun at the officers, who were near her. The officers attempted to get her to drop the gun and get on the ground, but she refused, according to a court complaint. Editor's note: This post was derived from information supplied by the Merrimack County Superior Court and does not indicate a conviction. This link explains the process for requesting the removal of a name from New Hampshire Patch police reports. Around 8:15 p.m., Henniker fire and rescue teams were called to the scene and requested to stage for police relative to “a psych problem.” Hillsboro police officers also arrived to assist and Merrimack County Sheriff’s deputies were also requested. Just past 8:30 p.m., Kowalski was captured, but vehicles had difficulty getting to the police due to the wooded area where they were located. Officers then brought her to the Henniker fire and rescue teams to be checked. Police accused Kowalski of pulling her arms away while officers were attempting to secure her in handcuffs. After taking control of her, she was accused of kicking an officer in the leg while they were trying to secure Kowalski in a police cruiser. She was out on bail at the time of the incident, having been released in early February. Kowalski was given a public defender and arraigned by video from the county jail in Hillsborough District Court on June 2 and held on preventative detention. The case was boundover to Merrimack County Superior Court on June 11. After the probable cause hearing, Judge Erin McIntyre advised the defense and prosecution she would not consider modifying bail without a “developed plan to address the defendant’s mental health,” according to a document. On June 17, Kowalski’s attorney motioned to seal the motion to amend bail, which Judge Daniel St. Hilaire granted. Kowalski is back in court on Aug. 27 for a dispositional conference hearing. According to court records, Kowalski has been arrested or charged with crimes 12 times since 2013. She had three motor vehicle violations in 2009.
