The idea behind the number
What is intrinsic value?
Intrinsic value is an estimate of what a stock is worth based on the cash its business can generate in the future, adjusted for growth and risk. It is independent of the price investors happen to pay for the stock today.
Forecast cash flows
A DCF valuation estimates the future cash the company may produce for its owners.
Discount for risk
Future cash flows are converted into today’s value using a discount rate that reflects uncertainty.
Compare value with price
The gap between intrinsic value and the current stock price indicates potential upside, downside, or a margin of safety.
